Camille Saint-Saëns

Cello Concerto in F major

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
String Serenade in C major, Op. 48

Two cello concertos in one evening? Unusual. Yet with this exceptional soloist, the unconventional becomes a revelation. Raphaela Gromes caused a sensation in 2023 with her album "Femmes", on which she performs works exclusively by female composers. In her programme “Belle Époque” with the SKO, she now brings teacher and pupil together: she juxtaposes Saint-Saëns’s First Cello Concerto with the recently rediscovered cello concerto by his composition pupil Marie Jaëll. The contrast is as striking as it is captivating, with the tonal palette ranging from delicate reverie to fiery ecstasy.

And then Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings takes us even deeper into the sparkling splendour of the Belle Époque.
